A convicted paedophile named by the Manchester Evening News as the prime suspect in the Lesley Molseed murder has been revealed as one of the country's most wanted child sex fiends.

Raymond Hewlett, 56, has numerous convictions for indecency against children and has served long stretches in jail. But he has been missing since he last left prison around four years ago and went to Ireland. In that time, the inquiry into Lesley's death has once again been re-opened, and once more, his name is high on the list of suspects.

Police today confirmed they are actively hunting him in connection with the brutal murder of the 11-year-old schoolgirl from Rochdale. His and the details of six other known paedophiles who are missing were released by the Metropolitan Police at the weekend in an effort to trace them.

Name-and-shame

Yesterday, they were all featured in a Sunday newspaper's name-and-shame campaign. The newspaper also claimed to have a database of thousands of child sex offenders across the country - including 902 in Manchester, 280 in Stockport, 200 in Rochdale, 480 in Salford, and 401 in Warrington.

Hewlett breached the Sex Offenders Act by signing the register but not telling police where he is.

The move comes after convicted paedophile Roy Whiting was jailed for life for the murder of eight-year-old Sarah Payne.

Police reopened the hunt for Lesley Molseed's killer in May this year. The 11-year-old Rochdale schoolgirl was knifed 12 times in 1975 and the first inquiry led to innocent Stefan Kiszko spending 16 years in jail.
