A man suspected of murdering schoolgirl Lesley Molseed in 1975 has been named as one of Britain s most wanted paedophiles.

Raymond Hewlett, formerly of Todmorden, was "named and shamed" in yesterday s News of the World. The paper is calling for a "Sarah s Law" to publicise the whereabouts of known sex offenders.

West Yorkshire Police today said they had given the newspaper permission to print Hewlett s name and photograph. He has convictions for kidnap, rape and assault on girls.

Mr Hewlett, now 56, left Calderdale days after the 11-year-old's body was found on moorland above Ripponden on October 6, 1975.

Lesley had been abducted while running an errand from her home in Rochdale three days earlier. She had been stabbed 12 times in the chest and head with a small knife. Although Lesley had not been raped, semen stains were found on her clothes.

In 1976, tax clerk Stefan Kiszko was convicted of murdering Lesley but was proved innocent by DNA evidence in 1992 and released from prison.

The News of the World is demanding the new law after convicted child molester Roy Whiting was jailed for the murder of Sarah Payne last week.

Detective Chief Superintendent Max McLean, who is leading the hunt for Lesley's killer, said in March that Hewlett was a suspect. "He lived in Todmorden and did offend against children," he told the "Evening Courier".

Last month, Det Chief Supt McLean revealed his officers had compiled a list of 103 suspects who might have killed Lesley - including Mr Hewlett. He had moved to Todmorden in 1962 after leaving the Scots Guards and married the following year. But he left for Southern Ireland in the days after Lesley s body was found and his whereabouts are now unknown.
